Live cattle futures closed the session with triple digit gains, erasing triple digit losses from Wednesday. Feeder futures finished Thursday trade up mostly over $2.00, but with 28 cent losses in expiring August. USDA beef export sales were at their highest point in seven weeks, totaling 12,800 MT for the week ending August 20. That was up 54% versus the previous week, and 20% larger than the same week in 2014. Accumulated 2015 beef exports are 11% behind the pace set last year. Dressed slaughter weights were higher again for the week ending August 15, to 837 lbs on average. The CME Feeder Cattle Index for 8/26 was down $1.29 to $211.05. The USDA afternoon report had choice boxes 3 cents lower to $244.21 (-$2.25 Thu to Thu) and select boxes at $233.12, down 48 cents (-$2.46). Cash cattle trade was light today, with a few dressed sales reported at $227. Asking prices are generally above $230. WTD estimated FI slaughter was 435,000 head as of Thursday afternoon, 6K higher compared to last week, but 28,000 head less than last year.
