Commodities symbols are created in three parts: the root symbol, the month code and the year code.
The month code - each month is represented with a single letter as displayed below. The year code - is displayed as one digit. Hence 2009 would be displayed as 9, and 2010 as 0, etc.
For example: US (T-Bond) June 2011 would be displayed as USM1. US is the commodity code M is the month of June 1 is for the year 2011
Cash contracts, when available, can be obtained by adding the suffix Y00 (zero zero) to the commodity code in place of the month and year code.
Shortcuts:
C*0 (GC*0, etc.) will return the next lead month for the specified commodity code. This is different from the front month
in that it will only return significant trading months for the commodity. For example, when GC*1 returns October Gold, GC*0 returns December Gold.
C*1 or C! (SP*1 or SP!, etc.) will return the front month for the specified commodity code.
C*2, SP*3, GC*4 (etc.) will return the 2nd, 3rd, 4th (etc.) month out for the specified commodity code
