data files and historical price information files.
Charts
The following information applies to all charts on Barchart.com.
Charts are available on every symbol in the Barchart.com database.
The default dynamic daily chart contains six months worth of price
activity with the open, high, low, close, change and volume numbers for
each bar presented in a display box above the chart. Each data point can
be viewed by moving your mouse through the chart. This is also true for
all information displayed on the chart, including the results of studies,
stock splits, dividends and earnings data.
- Splits are represented by the blue triangles on the bottom of the chart.
- Earnings are represented by the green triangles on the bottom of the chart.
- Dividends are represented by the purple triangles on the bottom of the chart.
When you draw a barchart with an overlay, the first three numbers are the
high, low and closing price for the day, followed by "res = " which is
short for results, then the results of the study selected as the overlay.
Volume is represented by horizontal lines beneath the open, high, low, close
barchart. A green volume bar represents the last price increased compared to the previous
trading session and a red volume bar represents the last price decreased compared
to the previous trading session.
Custom Charts
Custom Charts contains a selection of studies from our programming library, giving
the user over 40 of the most commonly requested technical analytics, ranging from
simple comparison charts to true Point and Figure. Custom Charts is an on-demand
charting program with user-selectable parameters. Easy to use, it works with
any browser and will create virtually any chart with a time frame ranging from
one day of trading activity to 25 years of monthly prices.
In general, all studies are in order: red, green, blue. Example: 5, 10, 15 day
moving average would have three lines: the 5 day in red, the 10 day in green, the 15 day in blue.
For Secondary Studies on the same chart the colors are in order: dark green, purple and black.
Symbol
The symbol is the stock or the commodity contract you wish to plot.
If you are unsure of the symbol, click on lookup symbol.
Size
Select the pixel x pixel size of the chart.
End Date
The last day of data that will appear in the chart. The default end date is the current day. Only change this if you want to make a historical chart.
Scale
Allows you to change the scaling of the chart. Linear scaling will calculate the most intelligent scale using the high, the low and a series of acceptable divisors for possible scales. The Logarithmic Scale uses logarithmic scaling instead of the linear scaling. No Scaling removes the logical divisors and takes the highest point on the chart, the lowest point on the chart, and the number of divisors to create the y-axis.
Time
Changes the density of the chart. The longer the time frame, the closer together the individual bars. The shorter the time frame, the more distance between bars.
Frequency
The frequency defines the unit of time to use per price. We currently have Intraday charts of
5-minute, 10-minute, 30-minute, and 60-minute (1 hour). We also have daily, weekly and monthly.
Depending on "frequency" and density, you can set the time frame of your
chart. For example, to draw an 8-year chart, use a frequency of "monthly" and the maximum density.
Compare to
The "compare to" field allows you to put in a second symbol. This will
generate a percent change chart for the two symbols, overlayed. The
left-most date will be a relative zero for each, and then a percent change
will be calculated. The left-most date can be adjusted by both the density
and frequency.
Note When doing a comparison, all other studies are disregarded, since
they are meaningless with respect to the comparison plot. Even volume is
not plotted.
Prices On and Creating Text Files.
If you have "Prices On" selected when you create the chart, a box will appear above it with the prices listed for whatever bar you place your mouse icon over. If you select "Prices Off" this box will be removed. You can create historical text files in Custom Charts by clicking on the "Prices On" arrow and selecting "ascii file" or "integer file." Then click "create chart" and it will give you a text file for that stock going back about two years. Then click "file" on your browser and "save as" and save the file as "filename.txt." If you want to go back further, just change the end date. You can take the first day of data in the text file you have just created and place that in the
end date and repeat the process. Then save the file and combine it with the previous one you just created and saved.
Features
- Click Volume On if you want the volume to appear at the bottom of the
chart. (This will not be active if you also have overlay studies).
- Click Events On if you want the chart to visually display events
(splits, dividends, etc.)
- Click Grids On if you want finer grid lines on the chart. The grids
will provide finer detail for vieweing.
- Click Fine Lines to decrease the line size of the chart.
Studies/Screens
The chart is divided into either one or two windows. Each window can have a study and an overlay. Each
study (and overlay) can take custom arguments (which you supply in the arguments boxes). Up to 3 custom
paramters can be entered. Volume will be replaced by any overlay, and if a two-window chart is drawn,
the java prices will not display.
Parameters
The custom parameters are used to change the default arguments associated with the study.
For example, the default days for the moving average are [ 20, 50, 100 ].
You can change one or all of these numbers by using the parameters box directly to the right of the
study name. Each number you enter in the parameters box will overwrite the default number associated
with the corresponding argument of the study.
So for example, say you wanted only a [ 10, 40 ] day moving average, enter 10 in the first parameter box,
enter 40 in the second parameter box and enter 0 in the third parameter box.
For help on the different studies used please refer to the
learning center.
Delayed chart data vs. Realtime chart data
There is a difference in how Barchart.com compiles and display chart data for delayed quotes and for realtime quotes.
For delayed quotes the information is only available in 5-minute increments. The information is back dated to the start of the period, so on a 5-minute chart information in the period dated 12:45 includes all trades between 12:45 and 12:49 inclusive. A trade at 13:00 would be included within the next bar dated 13:00.
With delayed data, a qualifying bid or ask price, that is a bid price above the last price, or an ask price below the last price on CBOT, CME, KCBT and MGEX contracts will be included within the price data on the charts. This is not true for realtime chart data, which only includes trades.
For realtime quotes the information is available in ticks, or in any time increment from 1 minute through to 99 minutes. The information is front dated to the end of the period. So on a 5-minute chart information in the period date 12:45 includes all trades between 12:41 and 12:45. A trade at 8:30 for the S&P will be included on the 8:30 bar. A trade a 8:31 on a 5-minute chart will dated as 8:35 and included with any other trades between 8:31 and 8:35 inclusive.

your personal quotes page. Custom Quotes displays the open, high, low,
last, change, volume, percent change and previous settle price. It is viewable in an
end-of-day and an intra-day mode and the symbol links to the chart of

MultiQuote / Portfolio
The MultiQuote Portfolio program has five different views:
- Quote Screen: The Quotes Screen view provides a daily summary of the futures in your portfolio with links to Quotes, Charts, and Options for each of the futures. You can enter or delete symbols right on this page and the changes will be reflected on your portfolio.
- Portfolio: The Portfolio view provides a detailed listing of your holdings including daily data.
- Portfolio (Edit Mode): The Portfolio (Edit Mode) is where you enter details of your stock transactions, such as number of shares and purchase/sale price. Changes made on this screen will be reflected in the Portfolio and Quote Screen views.
- Opinions: This will show the short-term, medium-term, long-term, and overall technical opinions for each item listed in your portfolio list.
- Add/Edit: The Add/Edit view is the portfolio maintenance page you are currently viewing. You can add, edit or rename your portfolios, and you can manage your quotes.
Quote Screen view
This is the quickest way to add symbols to the screen. At the bottom of the current screen
you will see the "enter symbol" box. Enter the symbols you want to appear, separated by commas, and
click on "refresh" to add them to the quote screen. The quote screen has 11 columns. The first
column is the symbol. The second column shows the latest price. The change is the difference between
the latest price and the previous close. Pct. Chg. is the percentage change of the difference between
the latest price and the previous close. The next column is volume followed by the open, high, low, and
previous close. You have the ability to sort the tables using any of the columns as the sort option
except "Date" or "Time CST".
Each column is a hyper link that by clicking on it, will sort the table according to that column.
Portfolio (Edit Mode)
The Portfolio Edit Mode is where you put in the details to track stocks that you have purchased or are paper
trading. Enter the symbol in the first box. In the second column, select the action (either bought or sold).
Then put in the entry date (the day you bought or sold the stock). The next column is the quantity of shares,
followed by the entry price, a low-alert price (if the price goes below this number, the alert will signal),
and a high-alert price (same as low, but vice versa). You use the closing date column and the closing price
column if you have closed out the trade. Once you are done filling in the columns, click on "Update Portfolio"
to save your settings. Then change from "Portfolio (Edit Mode)" view to "Portfolio" view.
Portfolio view
Portfolio view allows you to track the profit/loss of the stocks listed in your portfolio. The first column
is the symbol, followed by the date you purchased the shares, then the action (bought or sold), price of shares
at time of purchase, the quantity of shares purchased and then the total cost of the shares. The next column is
the current price. The Dly Chg is the difference between the current price and the previous settle price. The
next column is the current value of your shares, followed by percent change and finally the current profit/loss
of your trades. The total amount paid and the total profit/loss is listed in the bottom row. After the profit/loss column there is a column for the result icons. A smiley face means the stock is making a profit and a frown means it is losing money. If you have entered a low and/or high alert, there will be a "bomb" icon when the price breaks your alert.
You have the ability to sort the tables using any of the columns as the sort option except "Date" or "Action".
Each column is a hyper link that by clicking on it, will sort the table according to that column.
Opinions view
Opinions view will list the technical opinions for each of the stocks listed in your portfolio. The short-term
studies are based around 20 days' worth of data; medium-term studies are based around 50 days' worth of data;
and long-term studies are based around 100 days' worth of data. To view the strength and
direction of the opinion, click on the symbol of the stock in the symbol column of the Opinion view portfolio.
