Market Momentum
Market momentum is an overview of the stock market. Market momentum lists selected major market indices and market
rates as well as a market momentum summary box.
The NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX and OTCBB advances/declines and shares traded include all active stocks for that day.
The new highs and new lows total requires current daily volume greater than 10,000 shares
and last price greater than $2, or last price multiplied by volume greater than 10,000
for OTCBB stocks, and last price greater than $.25. Additionally, stocks must have traded for at least six months.
The market momentum box only takes into account those stocks trading that day, with a last
price above $2 and stocks traded on the NYSE, Nasdaq or AMEX. This also includes the advances,
unchanged and declines inside the market momentum box. Additionally, stocks must have traded for at least six months.
The momentum summary box contains a table of the number of stocks whose price has increased
and decreased and the percentage of stocks above their 20-, 50-, 100-, 150- and 200-day moving
average today, yesterday, last week and last month.
The formula is:
- 1) Calculate (price/previous - 1.0) for each split adjusted stock
- 2) Accumulate the result from step 1) for each of the 5000 - 6000 participating stocks
- 3) Multiply the total in 2) by 100.0 and divide the number of participating stocks
The result is the current Market Momentum Index expressed as a percentage.
Momentum also lists the number of NYSE, Nasdaq and AMEX stocks that have advanced and declined
for the day with the volume of shares traded, as well as the number of new 52-week high and
low stocks for each of the exchanges.

New Highs/Lows
The New Highs/Lows page lists those stocks that have made a new high or low
price today. The front page lists the number of stocks that have made
a new high or new low price over a 20-day (1 month), 65-day (3 months), 100-day
and a 52-week period. These stocks are then sub-categorized by exchange:
NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX, OTCBB, and by volume greater and less than 100,000 shares
traded for the day and by closing price above or below $10.
The New Highs/Lows page will only list those stocks that have made a new
high or low. It does not list those stocks who matched their prior high
or low.
By clicking on the link (the number of stocks that fit the criteria), you
can view the complete list of stocks. This page contains the name of the stock,
the high or low price, the last price, the daily price change, daily volume,
the percent range and the number of new high or lows during this period.
The percent range for new highs is the difference in the high price minus
the lowest price over the period divided by the lowest price over the period.
The percent range for new lows is the difference in the low price minus
the highest price over the period divided by the highest price over the period.
The number of new highs is the number of times the stock has hit a new high
price over the period. For example, in a 20-day period, if a stock's daily high
price is always greater than the previous day's high over the 20 days,
then this stock will have made 20 new highs over the 20-day period.
New Highs/Lows only includes those stocks traded on the NYSE, AMEX, Nasdaq or
OTCBB exchanges with over 20 days of prices, volume greater than 1000 daily shares
and last price above $0.25
FlipCharts are available of these pages, and subscribers have access to historical
data and can export this information into Excel.
New Highs/Lows are updated once a day at 7 p.m. ET.
What's Hot / What's Not
The What's Hot and What's Not section ranks stocks that have unusual price
movement with respect to their historic performance. This is done by calculating
the Standard Deviation which is a statistical measure of change in
volatility expressed as standard deviations from the historic average, or more
precisely, the variance in the latest period divided by the volatility over
the past 20 periods.
The advantage of this over simply supplying a list of stocks with the greatest
change on the day is that it will catch significant changes in stocks that
normally trade in a non-volatile manner. As an example, it will give equal
emphasis to utilities stocks and technology stocks.
As well as the standard deviation, these pages also list the closing prices,
daily change, percent change and the 20-day average volume price.
The price has to be between $5 and $1000, and trading for at least
a month and have an average daily volume of at least 10,000 shares.
What's Hot and What's Not are updated once a day at 8 p.m. ET.
