Unique to Barchart.com, the Signals sections and all pages contained within are derived from the results and technical analysis of the Technical Opinion.

Opinions analyze a stock or commodity using thirteen popular analytics in short-, medium- and long-term periods. Results are interpreted as buy, sell or hold signals, each with numeric ratings and summarized with a rating by percentages to buy or sell. The time frames for the short-, medium- and long-term opinions are the arguments used within each study in the opinion. The short-term studies are based on 20 days' worth of data; medium-term studies are based on 50 days' worth; and long-term studies are based on 100 days'.

The Opinion Snapshot will show you the opinion on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Advanced Opinions add market-timing information by calculating and interpreting signal strength and direction. Performance Analysis back tests each study used within the opinions, calculating a performance history of every buy and sell signal generated by each of the thirteen studies in the past two years with dates, trades, prices, profit and loss, and open-trade equity.

Each of the different buy or sell ratings also link to a chart of the item with the study overlaid to give you a graphical interpretation of the rating.

The Signals section is updated once a day at 6 p.m. ET. The signals section considers all stocks that traded that day on the NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ exchanges, with a daily closing price between $2 and $900 and a daily volume of at least 10,000 shares. To be included within the signals pages, the underlying stock must have at least six months' worth of trading history.

Top 100 / Bottom 100 Stocks

The Top 100 Stocks ranks stocks by a combination of their overall opinion, signal strength and signal direction to come up with a list of the top 100 stocks by opinion.

Each analytic used within the signals is rated by signal strength and direction. The strengths are allocated 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 points; the directions are allocated 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 points. This gives a maximum of 55 points per signal. The totals are added up depending on buy, sell and hold rating and ranked 1 to 100 for the top 100 bullish stocks and the top 100 bearish stocks.

The signal strength and signal direction ratings are available from the advanced opinion pages. Signal strength and signal direction are independent of the signals rating.

Top 1% by Strength / Direction

The Top 1% by Strength and Direction lists those stocks who are rated to be in the top 1% category by their signal strength and signal direction.

Each analytic used within the signals is rated by signal strength and direction. The strengths are allocated either 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 points and the directions are allocated 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 points. The strength and direction ratings are listed in the advanced opinion pages.

The totals are added up for strength and direction depending on the buy, sell and hold ratings and those stocks within the top 1% bracket are listed in these pages. Signal strength and signal direction are independent of the signals rating.

Signal strength can be used as an indicator of the long-term view of a market, whereas signal direction can be used a short-term (3-day) view of the current price activity.

Upgrades / Downgrades

Upgrades/Downgrades ranks stocks by their change in opinion from yesterday to today. The pages list the top 100 stocks ranked by daily increase and decrease of overall opinion.

As well as listing the change in opinion, today's opinion and yesterday's opinion, Upgrades/Downgrades also lists the closing price of the stock and the change on the day.

Signals Guide

The Signals Guide is a daily guide of today's opinions. The first box- the overall opinion-lists the stocks that are at a 100% buy or a 100% sell configuration. The second box contains the listing of stocks whose indicators have changed to a new buy, sell or hold from the previous trading day.

Each of these lists have a subset of stocks, which can be accessed by clicking on the stock listing for each box.

The 100% Buys and 100% Sells lists all the stocks who are at a 100% buy or 100% sell, along with yesterday's opinion, the opinion as of last week and the opinion as of last month.

The Signal Indicators list contains all the stocks which have changed to this indicator today. The column headings in this page are the short-, medium-, and long-term opinions and the overall opinion.

Signals Search

Signals Search will allow you to search through the Signals database. You can search through any of the fields from the opinions-including the indicators ratings, short-, medium- and long-term and overall results to give you a customized results list. The Signals Search database is restricted to contain stocks whose price is greater than 2 and less than 900, and whose daily volume is above 10,000.

We display the results of your search along with the price, short-term, medium-term, long-term and overall opinion rating.

Please note Barchart.com does not trade. We are not a trading firm and we are not advising you to make any trades. The information listed is simply the common interpretation of the results of popular technical analytics.
